Charcoal Drawing- Still Life

Charcoal Drawing- Still Life

Two weeks ago, I posted an image of my portfolio I had made for my Introduction to My Visual Arts class, where we learn about art history and then apply it to various projects using different art mediums. Today, I am posting a picture of my charcoal still life drawing, created by using different types of charcoal to draw an image of a grouping of objects that we had been shown, focusing on specific values of light and dark to make our images appear three dimensional or as a form versus a shape. First, we sketched out our basic shapes with a graphite stick, then I used a charcoal stick and white charcoal to identify the brightest and darkest spots, before filling the whole shapes in with more medium tones using by 4b charcoal. I greatly enjoyed this particular project, because by placing a cart of objects in the middle of the room, everyone in the class drew a slightly different picture, which was interesting to see. Secondly, I enjoyed this project because it was extremely satisfying to rub the charcoal into the paper, and slowly meld different colors together.
