The Box- English 8 Story Starter

This year, I was asked to write the exposition of a suspense story, and this following essay is what I choose to write! I hope that this short story encourages you to build on this story or write your own!

The Box

     The doorbell rang. The Judge released her breath and deposited the book she was reading onto the side table, and as she stood, her joints cracked like steps on an old floorboard. She strolled through her humble apartment, her slippers quietly sticking to the worn tile. Her breath caught as she noticed it sitting on her porch step while she peeked out the curtains. Almost instantly, her hands began to tremble, her breath coming out in unsteady puffs.

     The box was yellow in the eerie glow of the lamp. The perpetual fingers of time had quietly rubbed the color off the box, however, the shape of a traditional board game case still remained untouched. Casting one last glance over her shoulder, she grabbed the box, pivoted, and entered the house once again.

    Shoving her book onto the floor, she placed the brittle box onto her table, weaving her manicured hands under the top of the box, lifting the lid up. A quiet gasp escaped her lips as the sight registered. Dried roses with the life sucked out of them, became a bed for two snow-white dice. The box hit the floor with a plunk as the glove pressed against her mouth. “Good luck,” the voice said, it’s breath sending warm tendrils down her neck. It’s found me, she thought………...
